Well, I thought I had better post about episode #3 before the MILLION DOLLAR NEIGHBOURHOOD airs the next episode tonight!

So welcome to week 3 "SKILLS & JOBS"

This week Mike and I were 'TEAM VICKI"! One of our challenges for this week was to find Vicki a job, but let us take a step back a bit and let me tell you how this worked. Out of the 100 families participating in the show, they asked the ones who were looking for work to stand in front of the group. There were about 9 people standing and the rest of us were broken into even groups to support and find work for these people. Well, let me tell you it is not easy promoting someone you have never met.

So, that brings us to our girl Vicki, an Interpersonal Relationship Specialist!! Though "Team Vicki" did not get any "air" time, in the end we were more than successful!

This was the week I volunteered to be team leader, but I give full credit to Vicki for listening, for taking suggestions, answer many questions and taking constructive criticism from a whole group of people she hardly knew. In the end Vicki gave a workshop to a large group of MDN'rs on

and it was a huge success and she left us wanting more!!

We are so proud of Vicki and so proud to now call her our friend!

Did you see me in the last episode??? This seems to be all the camera time I get...peaking through the crowd!! Do you see who is in front of me??? That is Mark. It is during this week that I first met Mark and Kyle, as they were also on Team Vicki and as I discovered during the Skills Market, Mark has a passion for Interior Design...HELLO!

Another unexpected gift from this experience is our new friendship with Mark and Kyle. Little did we know that they just live a few homes away from ours. I feel truly blessed to have met our new neighbours and are so happy for them winning the weekly $10,000!!!

If you saw the last episode you will remember Kyle yelling "PARTY AT OUR HOUSE", well true to their word, that is just where our family is headed tonight to watch episode #4

"Breaking Bread & Making Dough"!

This next episode will be interesting...it is amazing each week to watch how the production company puts together an hour show from the many hours of taping that happened. Maybe this week I will be more than just a face in the crowd????

One of the many things I learned this week was the power of "NETWORKING", the power of people coming together! When our MDN Family comes together and there is a need in the group...word spreads like wild fire. Whether it be someone needing a job, someone needing an emergency car repair, someone needing a babysitter or someone just needing to talk....GREAT THINGS HAPPENED! This experiece has brought together so many different people, with so many different personalites but together we are one "COMMUNITY" and it is a great thing!!

Even though the "SHOW" is over, our Million Dollar Neighbourhood lives on...

I LOVE IT when customers send me pictures of their ANNIE SLOAN CHALK PAINT projects. Donna sent us this picture of her dining room table and chairs painted in Annie Sloan Pure White. She loves it and so do we...nice work Donna!

Leeann took our Annie Sloan Chalk Paint workshop and did a wonderful job taking photos along the way to share the transformation. This table belonged to her grandparents and has the perfect piece for a "first" project.

EPISODE #2 - THE GREAT PURGE

THE MILLION DOLLAR NEIGHBOURHOOD - THE GREAT PURGE

The idea of making money is GREAT! The idea of letting go some items you love is NOT! Our family is constantly decluttering and passing on items we no longer need, but there are a few "home decor" items that I have been keeping just because I love them so much! As you all know, I own a home decor store, so I LOVE my home decor. I have pictures that I love so much but have no where to hang, so I just put them on the floor and stack them just because they make me happy! Is that wrong?? I know there are a few of you out there who do the same thing!!!

There are so many reasons we hang on to the "STUFF" and I sure experienced some brave and strong people during this challenge who made HUGE strides in "letting go". Some families took the whole week to declutter and prepare for this sale. As I was very busy preparing for the Chairs for Charity event at work, we took just a few hours and made some very quick and sometimes painful decisions.

Our family was on the Advertising Team for the garage sale and I want to give a HUGE shout out to my husband Mike and my son Max. Even though we could not make "the filming" time for the show, these two men made 87 homemade signs and together put them up all over town the night before the garage sale and then took them all down the next day! Nice work boys!!

I would like to introduce you to one of the hosts of MDN, Bruce Sellery. Bruce is more than just a financial expert, he is a motivator, a good listener and a friend to all MDN families. I felt that Bruce genuinely cared about everyone and he worked tirelessly to help people live a better life.

Bruce gave all MDN families a copy of his book "Moolala". He also supported our local community by lending his name and an autographed copy of his book to The Passionate Home's
Chairs for Charity Auction benefiting the Langley Christmas Bureau. Thank you Bruce!

During the garage sale we also had the opportunity to meet Cari Cucksey from

HGTV's Cash & Cari. I am sure if we had more time together we would be great friends!! Cari also supported us in our Chairs for Charity Auction and her colour pick was orange!!! She gave us an autographed photo and you can visit The Passionate Home to view the chair we designed just for her!

This week of filming was extremely busy as we continued to live CASH ONLY, we made garage sale signs, we got down into the crawl space to "let go", I painted and designed 13 chairs for The Passionate Home's charity event, we continued to build a business, we spent time with the kids and we did our MDN homework!!!! Nothing good comes easy!!

EPISODE #1 - HIDDEN MONEY???

MILLION DOLLAR NEIGHBOURHOOD - EPISODE #1 HIDDEN MONEY

Did you know that money falls from the sky in Aldergrove???

Well, neither did we, but it is OPRAH you know...anything is possible! :)

Well, here we are...100 families all living in the same community and did we know anyone??? NO! That was sad and shocking. We really had no idea what to expect but we made the commitment so here we go....

Week one - Find HIDDEN MONEY in your home. Max and I had fun with this one and searched high and low, under cushions and in pockets. We took the bottles in and rolled up our pennies! $275.00 worth of hidden money was found in our home. $275.00 which Max and I spent quality time together rolling, rolling and rolling, just to have Mike and Laurel unroll it all to go into the coin counters!!!! (Lucky I worked this day!!)

And just in case you missed it, they saved the best for last,

here we are near the end of the program.

Week one - Live CASH ONLY! Yes, we really did hand in our credit cards, but that was alright with us as we try to live cash only anyways with the exception of business.

Our family watched the first episode of Million Dollar Neighbourhood with our new friends that we met through the show, The Penner Family! Our families get along wonderfully and this friendship was truly one of the unexpected "gifts" from the show!

Our families gathered together early to make cake pops for after the show!!

Teresa had made special STAR cookies with every one's name on them!

After all...we are ALL stars!!

The BIG screen was up and ready for an early showing of the Million Dollar Neighbourhood...

this way we could watch it again at 8pm! (hehe)

We even dined with Million Dollar Money all around us!!!

Oh look...here we are again!!!

Week one - The HIDDEN MONEY MARKET was a very hot day and I was at work this day, so Mike and Laurel spent the whole day in the park learning to save money. Sadly, H&R Block could not find us any "Hidden Money" but they sure did an amazing job for some of the families and we were all so excited for them!

The biggest thing we learned from this first week was that no matter how organized you think your financial paperwork is in...it can always be better! Mike and I are always looking for ways to save money and we always try to keep our paperwork in some kind of order but yet when in comes time to creating a net worth statement, it seemed like nothing was where it was supposed to be! Gathering our paperwork was not easy and only the first of many challenges to come!

A MILLION DOLLAR OPPORTUNITY??

Some of you may or may not know that last year I was offered the opportunity to be a part of a "social experiment" reality type TV show called the MILLION DOLLAR NEIGHBOURHOOD. After much discussion of the pros and cons of doing something that you have never done before and not really knowing what it all entails, my husband Mike and I made the decision to have faith and to embrace this opportunity.

So, let me tell you a bit about the Million Dollar Neighbourhood. The idea of the show is to increase the net worth of Aldergrove by one million dollars in 10 weeks. Now, when I say Aldergrove, I mean the 100 families that participated in the show. So, through a series of challenges, as a group we worked together in hope towards achieving this unbelievable goal!

Sworn to secrecy, I can not share details, but as the air day quickly approaches, I felt that I need to share how I am feeling. It started off as excitement, then it turned to nervousness and then yesterday, I saw an interview on the news with one of the hosts of the show talking about the upcoming premier and that is when I got scared! This is really happening, this is really real! When you are a part of something so big and so encompassing, you are not thinking about the fact that (possibly) millions of people will be watching. Well, now it is sinking in and I am realizing that this is HUGE!

It will be interesting to see how it all comes together and I hope you watch. These are real people. Really great people. We can all learn from this, it's family friendly and it is inspiring!

After each episode, my plan is to do a short post about my thoughts on what is happening and how it affected my family and what we learned from each challenge.

ANNIE SLOAN CHALK PAINT WORKSHOP

On Saturday January 14th we held our second Annie Sloan Chalk Paint Workshop, but it was the first time we held it in the store. The first workshop was in our old location which is know being renovated to expand the neighbouring kitchen store. This forced us to clean up the back of the store and ready it as initially planned to use as a workshop space. A space for ASCP workshops, upholstery, paint demo days and whatever other opportunities come our way. It is now a place like minded people can gather to learn, to have fun and to share!

I have found that there is always a level of excitement in the air
when like minded people gather!

Decision, decision...the options are limitless!

Happiness is a women being creative!

WOW, did we get some unique ideas and colour combinations!

Our group spent the day "hands on" learning, painting, distressing and waxing!

It was a GREAT way to spend the day!

A great way to start of the New Year is with a bit of inspiration. I am pleased to say that some of the ladies who took our first Annie Sloan Chalk Paint Workshop were kind enough to share photos of their first projects....

so here we go!

Claudine had some fun and mixed Aubusson Blue with Cream for her first coat. Her second coat was Cream and topped it with Dark Wax. She liked the "beachy" look and is ready to start her second project using just the Aubusoon. Thanks Claudine!

Claudine was also our winner of the ANNIE SLOAN CHALK PAINT AMERICAN TOUR GIVEAWAY! Congratulations Claudine!!!

This is Sarah's project piece.

Sarah sanded down the top of this dresser and rubbed it down with dark wax. She then painted one coat of Graphite followed by 2 coats of Emperor's Silk and after distressing, finished up with dark wax. I just love Emperor's Silk....Great job Sarah!

Dani...your desk looks very rustic and wonderful!!

Ladies, thank you so much for sharing your photos and for the positive feedback on our ASCP workshop. There is nothing like the feeling in a room when everyone is so excited and passionate about the same things! We loved having you!

OUR FIRST ANNIE SLOAN PAINT WORKSHOP

Well, the day is here...our first ANNIE SLOAN CHALK PAINT WORKSHOP!
We have every colour ready to go!

We are excited for the arrival of 12 creative and beautiful women!

It is almost time.....

And we are off and creating! I think we will start off with a little finger painting!

Just like when we were kids!

Everyone created their own custom

Annie Sloan Chalk Paint hand painted colour card.

This will make picking a colour at home much easier!

A palette of wonderful colours!

Everyone tested their new paint brushes and got to work painting,

creating, learning and sharing.

It was a joy to spend the day with so many women who were so excited

about learning something new.

Time just flew by....

We did take a short break for lunch but even the empty table was a work of art don't you think?

It was so wonderful to spend the day doing what you love!

It has been a dream of mine to bring like minded people together under one roof to share and create. Everyone showed up for the workshop full of enthusiasm and it was truly the people that made the day so successful!

With this old timer we added.....

The proud colours of our city of Langley and we created the Mayor Fassbender chair! A coat of Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in Graphite and polished up with Annie Sloan Dark Wax and this is what you get! But that is not all, oh no!!!

You also get this beauty representing the BC Lions!
Up for auction is our matching chair to the Mayor Chair but this time painted with Annie Sloan Napoleonic Blue and topped with dark wax, some team colours trimmed in white leather and up for auction this chair went complete with an autographed team photo!

This was my favorite (much to my husbands horror!) so I claimed it to become
THE PASSIONATE HOME CHAIR!

After removing a few hundred nails and a little TLC, this little lady was treated to a coat of Annie Sloan Paris Grey, a soft distressing rub down and we finished off with a coat of dark wax. Add some vintage inspired fabric and a few NOT rusted upholstery tacks and she is a beauty!

THINK PINK ~ BEHIND THE SCENES

Well, the Chairs for Charity event is done and our Red Carpet Christmas event has come and gone, so I thought I would share a few before and after photos of the chairs that we auctioned off with all proceeds going to the Langley Christmas Bureau. Above is the 'before" picture of the chair that we paired up with local business "Forever Your Lingerie".

If you have every been in Sonya's store, you know the colour is PINK! I wanted to use Annie Sloan Chalk Paint as much as possible but to get the right shade of pink I started with an oil base paint and I was not happy with the results, so....Kristy from 4 the Love of Wood to the rescue. Kristy offered and I was happy for the help and just look at what she brought over!!! And so, the mixing and spraying begins...a little of this and a little of that and little Annie Sloan Chalk Paint and we have a beautiful one of a kind, never to be duplicated colour and finish!

A quick trip to the upholsterer, again picking fabric that depicts Forever Yours. A beautiful photo of our "celebrity" Sonya and it is off to the auction block!

This sweet baby brought in a good dollar and all monies were donated to the

Langley Christmas Bureau!

A happy ending...our pink chair goes to a great home!

I recently had the opportunity to meet Cari and I am very excited and grateful that she agreed to be a part of this great charity event. Being that Cari is the host of HGTV's CASH & CARI and she also owns Re Purpose, 4,200 square feet of store front just bursting with treasures, we are feeling just a bit of pressure to make her chair make-over fabulous!

Cari's colour of choice is orange and you can take this celebrity chair home with you the evening of October 27. The auction starts at 6:30pm with all proceeds benefiting the Langley Christmas Bureau.

THE MAYOR PETER FASSBENDER CHAIR

Yesterday we introduced you to our first CHAIRS FOR CHARITY CELEBRITY, STARBUCKS. Today, let me introduce you to our second celebrity, Mayor Peter Fassbender, the Mayor of the City of Langley.

Mayor Fassbender has requested his chair to be in the colours of our city of course! Elinor and I have put our heads together and are excited to report that we will be starting this make-over with Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in Napoleonic Blue. That is all the hints for now, but stay tuned for the before and after photos and remember this chair, as well as many others will be up for auction the evening of October 27th at our CHAIRS FOR CHARITY event, with all proceeds going to the Langley Christmas Bureau.

CHAIRS FOR CHARITY

In the spirit of the holidays The Passionate Home "Family" likes to give back to the community. This year we are very excited to host our first "CHAIRS FOR CHARITY" event.

What this means is that we are looking for donations of unwanted dining chairs; they must have a fabric seat, wood back and be good and solid.

The Passionate Home will lovingly restyle these chairs into "Celebrity Themed" works of art and auction them off with all proceeds going to the Langley Christmas Bureau.

Our live auction will take place at The Passionate Home the evening of October 27.

NEW ITEMS IN STORE

Items here at The Passionate Home come and go so quickly sometimes, I do not get a chance to take photos and share them, but not today...today take a peek at some new items in store! These shoes are very cool as they hold a wine bottle and make the perfect girlfriend gift! We have also sold them for jewelry and for shoe lovers just to admire!

We received two of these lamps and they match the chandelier in store! The set would make a great addition to someones bedroom.....

A shipment of signs just arrived in store. You can never have enough of a good thing! We have so many words, signs and quotes around our home that last week my daughter had some friends over and one mentioned that with all the words he had read while at our home he felt inspired and was sure that he was going to go somewhere in life! (was he just trying to be funny!)

Another item you can never have enough of is CLOCKS!!!

ROAD TRIP ~ THE FARM CHICK ANTIQUE SHOW

DESTINATION: The Farm Chick Antiques Show in Spokane, Washington

After a quick meet up at Starbucks across the line, we excitedly began our journey south, planning our attack and remaining focused on the real reason for our trip, to have FUN, to score TREASURES & to be FIRST in line at the Farm Chick Show the following morning.

I am happy to share with you that our hard work paid off and the Canadian Girls armed with lawn chairs, a cooler full of water and power bars, were number TWO in line! Yes, that is correct, that is us sitting pretty, right next to the gate that will swing open in only 2.5 hours!

As you can see, it was a beautiful day and it was a great opportunity to get to know each other better and meet other "Chicks" from all over the U.S. Maris and Joanna took us up on our invitation to join us, so this is their first Farm Chick Show and they are very excited and we are excited to have them along!

Since this was not my first time at the Farm Chick Show, I knew a bit about what to bring along for the day. Not only did we pack lawn chairs and a cooler, we also brought along our own personal Sherpas! Two to be exact. Sporting their Canadian pins, these boys duties included driving us to the show (9 hours), fetching our morning Starbucks (so that we could line up earlier), being available via text to pick up our purchases during the show and taking them to our van, making sure everyone was well hydrated and fed, as we stayed focused on our mission, finding out which pub in Spokane would be playing the Canucks Game for us after the show...and the list goes on! This was no small task, I mean there was four of us gals and only two of them (and one went mysteriously missing part way through??), but we made due!

Many, many people arrived after us but, we never saw them because we were in the FRONT!

I must give a shout out to my personal Sherpa Mike, because I had ladies coming up to me during the show saying, "Are you the Canadian girls in the front whose husbands brought coffees? How did you get them to come to the show? And "is that your husband? He is so wonderful, he carried my table all the way to my car for me!" (later I found out that is because he thought the lady said she was parked in row "B" not "P") I had to put a stop to that kind of chivalry, he may become too tired to help ME! I would say there were many "random acts of kindness" made on this day, thanks honey!

Sporting our matching Canadian dog tags, we finally entered the building and proceeded to one of my favorite vendors, RETREAT. I loved this little cabinet, but it was already sold!

Booth upon booth of beautiful creations, it is hard to decide which way to go next!

The vendors did an amazing job with their booths and display, it all was very inspiring!

This vendor is BLUE CANOE, and I remembered his beautiful booth from last year. You could just stand forever and just admire and be near it. Do you know what I mean?

So romantic, so beautiful!

OH MY, this was a surprise, so many beautiful linens and pillows brought from Germany

When I turned 40, I want cowboy boots for my birthday, well, that was three years ago and I still do not own a pair! But, just look see what I found at the show! Unfortunately, you can see that this particular pair belong to the lovely lady who is wearing them, but do not be sad for me because she told me where her husband bought them and it is never too late! I am on the hunt for "Gringos"!

Another new vendor I discovered was BURLAP AND BOXWOOD. I absolutely loved everything she had (note to self, next year bring more money and a trailer!)

EURO-LINENS, I wanted it ALL!

I even wanted what was not for sale. On one of the rare trips I took outside to load the van, look what drove into the parking lot. Mike and I have always wanted an old truck and I think once we painted "THE PASSIONATE HOME" on the side of this one, it would do just right. Mike and I were both in agreement but.....

looks like I would be the only one allowed to drive it....sorry honey!

Back inside, the treasure hunting continues!

The day is done for these Canadian gals, the hockey game is about to start (although Joanna begged to stay behind), both vans were full, our feet were sore, our mouths were parched, but FUN was had by all and I personally brought home just a few lovies to share with my PASSIONATE HOME FAMILY!

Many Passionate Home family members came out to help us celebrate and a few actual family members too! Meet my Omi and my Nana. (Nana is 100 years old but she doesn't want anyone to know, so if you see her out walking, don't tell her I told you!)

I am forever changed by the experience of opening my own business, by the people that I have met, by the stories they share, by the faith that I have had to call upon to focus on the positive and to believe in things that we do not see. By the unwavering support of my husband. By all the kind gestures, words and incredible acts of kindness I have experienced since opening TPH. For my old friends and new friends and for each of you who have shared TPH with their friends and for those who have allowed me to sell their creations in my little shop, for all this and more, I am truly grateful.

WE DID IT!

It was April 30, Saturday night at 5pm that we closed the doors on The Passionate Home's old location, packed up our bags and moved across the lane into our future.

After 2 1/2 hours and many trips across the lane, this is how the new store looked as we closed up for the evening in order to get a good nights sleep in order to get an early start Sunday morning.

Monday morning the old awning came down and the new one went up.

New signage too!

Wednesday at 10am we open the doors to our customers in our new location.

WELCOME EVERYONE!

Join me for a little tour of our new local. The new space is large enough to carry a few custom upholstered pieces, something I have always wanted to carry! Don't they look GREAT!

To the right we have a seasonal area and believe it or not...it's SPRING! So, here you will find lovies for your outdoor living areas and garden.

To the left you will find a beautiful selection on jewelry.

A few steps into the store and this farmhouse table sits in the center of the shop.

Tableware on your right,

and soaps and beach/cottage treasures in the back left.

Opposite is the new baby area, with new items arriving daily!

In the center back we hung a collection of mirrors to reflect the natural light and to make the the back of the store just as special and fun as the front!

Here is the new front counter, it is an old store counter and we matched it up with our old counter in order to have a nice long and spacious area for our customers. Behind the counter we hung an old garden gate and flanked it with topiary trees in urns in order to replicate The Passionate Home logo.

PETRIFIED MOULDINGS??

WOW, what a learning experience this floor has been. We have finished applying two coats of clear coat in the new Passionate Home location and I think I have made a few enemies in my neighbours due to the smell. I guess I just wasn't thinking that it would be that bad, but apparently, it was BAD! Looking on the positive side, there was a lesson learned!

On to one of the exciting parts of this project, I made time to shop at a few New & Used Building Supply stores and just look at those babies in the back. Do you see them? The tall dark and handsome ones?? My husband said that I was crazy, but my heart made me dream about them and my fingers made me call the company the next day to hold them for me...Oh, happy day!

So, once the nice gentleman cut them in half to fit into my van, and I applied a little TSP & TLC, they made their way into the new location, ready and standing tall for someone to lovingly fit them into place. We had just enough to do just one wall, so we lined them up against the wall that is painted Oxford White and they look wonderful! After all, The Passionate Home is all about Reclaiming, Restyling & Redecorating...I am just doing my job!

For the rest of space we just used regular old primed baseboards, but I must say, mouldings really finish a space nicely and I think we only have about a thousand holes to fill!

The best part of this step in the project is this man...With my right hand still in a brace I can not even lift a book let alone a nail gun, so I had to ask for help. Really, who am I kidding, this project would have taken me a full day and it only took this man a few hours! I am so very thankful for friends...Stan you're the best! (you too Tracey!)

At this point in the game, the hero in my story is still smiling. When he got to my 90 year old dark and handsome moulding, I think he said something about being as hard as "petrified wood" and having to turn the power up on his nail gun, but really, can wood really be as hard as stone?? It is at this point that all I can do is smile! After all, how is a girl to know? Another lesson learned!

ISLAND CHICK SHOW

This past weekend Elinor, Susan and I hit the road at 6 AM and headed south to the Island Chick Show in Anacortes. Visions of vintage, garden and more dancing threw our heads. It turns out that it did not take as long as we thought and we arrived at our destination before some of the vendors, so we enjoyed a very delicious breakfast and vanilla latte at The Calico Cupboard Cafe & Bakery.

We were lined up at 8:30 for a 9 am opening. There were a few vendors set up outdoors and this trophy was the first thing that I spotted. Unfortunately, it was the one that got away. I am sure it made someone else very happy!

Once the line started to move I said, "okay ladies, lets head for the back and work our way to the front". But, once I got in the first thing I see is one of my favorite vendors RETREAT! "okay ladies, plan B, you are on your own, I am going here first!" (I did say it nicely) RETREAT always has such an inspiring display and so many wonderful items, it was a great start!

This dresser reminded me of the one I saw in Donna's home from FUNKY JUNK INTERIOR. One day, I am going to do this!! (I keep saying that but I do mean it)

Did I mention that I love RETREAT? Here is one of the happy moments of the day and do you see that Garden sign behind me??? I took it home for some lucky person! My husband said that the lucky person can not be me, so I will bring it into the store when we have moved into our larger location at the end of the month. For now, I am LOVING IT at home!

So many wonderful ideas and finds, I wanted to take it all home to my NEST!

Loving these bracelets made from old buckles. The one of the top left was my favorite.

I think I have a thing for words..I loved this little cooler. Remember the days the milk man would come to the house? Oh, the good old days! Sometimes, he would give us chunks of ice to eat, and that would make it a good day!

After the show we walked up the street and visited Days Gone By Antique Mall, Alley Cat Antiques & Maison Jardin where we picked up these cowboy hats in preparation for the

Farm Chick Show in Spokane in June. You can see that I was sporting a Canucks Jersey, just saying, we are proud to be Canadians!

It was a great day and a great show! I understand that the ladies from the Island Chick Show will be posting a video on Facebook, so I will be sure to forward that when it comes out...You may just see a few familiar faces!

AND THE FLOOR MARCHES ON, PLUS MORE!

Picking a stain colour is not easy! Just look at all those samples. The funny thing about stain is that the colour on the pretty brochure, the colour in the can and the colour on your choice of wood are not all together the same colour! I travelled near and far, made friends and enemies along the way and I had thought that I had found the PERFECT colour, so here we go.

Oh look, some more "floor art", thanks Elinor! You can also see one of the wall colours in this photo. We kept if light and neutral ~ Benjamin Moore Natural Linen and Oxford White.

If you look closely you can see the back corner is rather dark...well that is what I thought would be the perfect colour! After a few moments of shock and a trip to Home Depot, we moved full steam ahead with a stain colour called "Mission Oak". I think it was about at this stage that my right arm gave out and I have had to call in the professionals to finish up and that is a hard thing to do when you are a "hands on" kind of girl. I am sure you all know what I am talking about. After I realized that the floor was out of the picture for me, I took advantage the sunny day to prepare these two tables for the new location. I purchased these great long tables from a local nursery that was closing and with a bit of TLC & TSP, they will make for a super display space. As you can see, you can never be outdoors without throwing the ball for Sarge!

I also cleaned up this set of doors that I found at an Antique store. Chippy paint, original hardware, great colour...I am a happy camper! They will look so great together in the new shop.

There is so much to do before the opening, even my daughter helped out...now here is a rare picture! I have to say, she did an amazing job on this table top. Once she finished sanding, she stained it a dark walnut and you are going to love, love it!

CUSTOM FLOOR COMING UP!

Like a day in kindergarten, I spent the day drawing and painting, but different from kindergarten, I was allowed to paint on the floor! Now that the sub floor is finished in The Passionate Home's new location, the next step is to put my own stamp on it! I ripped a page out of a magazine once of a star that I thought that maybe one day I would paint it on a floor. Well, the day is here. I took my wrinkled up piece of paper to Staples and for $12 they made it much, much bigger!

So, I traced the outline on the floor and mixed a chocolate brown paint and a light brown to create my long awaited star. This was a long process considering I only have the use of my left hand! I must say that things moved a bit too slowly and I had to use my right hand just a bit!

Here is another picture that I am painting on the floor of the new space. I am using the same layout that I used to paint my living room coffee table.

Done!

In the center of the store I stenciled "Live with Passion". I currently have this quote over the door of my current location and I just love it. I will distress all my handy dandy artwork before we stain. My hope is that it will look like it has been there for years!

Still, lots of work to do. In the mean time,

JUMPING IN WITH BOTH FEET

The Passionate Home is MOVING, GROWING, EXPANDING and we are JUMPING IN WITH BOTH FEET! Most of you have been with me since we opened our first location in Langley 5 years ago. Our first location was about as large as a postage stamp (480 square feet) and we soon had to knock down a wall to make things just a bit bigger, gaining an extra 180 sf. After 2 years we moved on over to McBurney Lane and gained a bit more space and a pretty outdoor courtyard. Well, it has been 3 years and I think it is time again!

We will be moving across the courtyard into the old Umtali Arts (Spot of Africa) location. This is what the area looks like today. I thought it might be fun to share with you the transformation of our new home. BIG changes happening to the exterior of the building, but you will have to wait and see. Today, let me take you inside.

WELCOME to our new home! It does not look like much today, but just you wait! When we first took over this space it had a mix of old carpeting and dark green tile...no, no, no, that will just not do! This building is older and has seen just a few make-overs making the floor a map of hills and valleys, so flooring options have proven to be our first dilemma.

Our budget is tight for this project so we have decided to remove the carpet and put down a new 5/8" T & G plywood sub floor and stain it ourselves. Today I will go out in search of the perfect colour stain. (Funny, my husband suggested the colour I stained the stairs might be nice! I think he likes the stairs!!! No, the stairs are not done yet...did I mention I pulled all the tendons in my right arm? Did I mention that I am right handed? More on that later!)

Here is a view of the inside looking out of the front doors. All that teal colour around the doors and windows will be painted out in black. After the installation of the floor, I will call the painters. Once they start, I will share with you the colours that will provide our background and let me tell you, this was not an easy decision!

Our new location is just over 1500 square feet and it will allow us to have a bit of a meeting/craft/networking/workshop/unpacking/whatever we want space. Having this extra space is something that I have dreamt about since our first "Decorating Dilemma Workshop".

(There was only room to seat about 8 ladies and we had to put the wine and cheese outside in the hallway and that is just NOT acceptable!) See that hole in the wall? That is just a hole, no electrical here. Oh and did I mention that there are no light switches in this space, just a breaker box. I think I need an electrician! This will be the front counter area and I am sure I will need a chandelier and some power here!!

My plan is to share with you our progress as we transform this location into a space full of PASSION for you and your home. So many of you have shared in our journey since we opened 5 years ago and for that I am forever grateful. My hope is that you find inspiration in this story and that you can relate it to your own life and that you may decide to "JUMP" into something that you have always dreamt about.

Bye Bye old carpet...there is no looking back now!

IT SHOULD NOT TAKE THIS LONG!

No, I am not finished yet! For those of you who are wondering what is taking so long, well, here is an update. I have stained the steps and I will be putting on the third clear coat tonight. I love the way they are looking and once the moldings are on and I give them and the risers one more coat of paint, I think we will be done! Oh, and the hand rail needs just one more coat. Oh, and the new moldings along the floor will need a coat and around the door needs a little TLC. Maybe I am not as close to being done as I thought! Let me share with you why this project is taking a bit longer than it should.

Sargent has not been feeling very well. It all started one evening, late at night when he was sick at the top of the stairs and all down the stairs! (I am sure Mike is thanking me now for removing the carpet!) I was wondering if Sargy didn't like the colour stain I chose? But, it continued for the next three days and he would not eat or drink. I will not get into the graphic details, but today he is feeling much better. So, thanks to Sarg, I had to move cleaning my carpets up on my list of things to do!

Another delay...the evening my husband went out of town, he put a new bottle of water on our water dispenser and the next morning we woke to find that all the water had disappeared! This mystery lead me into the crawl space where I found that thanks to a crack in the water jug, all the water had leaked out and ran between my floor and the moldings. The insulation under this area in the kitchen was good and wet, so I pulled it out and discovered we had an unwanted view of my backyard! It is about now that I am wondering when Mike is due home! So, instead of working on my stairs, I took a trip to Home Depot for insulation, dressed in my best rubber gloves, mask, goggles and toque and got to work. Oh, if you could have seen me!

And don't forget the store! I need to deliver something new every day. I purchased this plastic dress form and I am planning on covering it with sheet music. I have never done this before, so stay tuned and I will post before and after photos. After all, I need to do something while the clear coat on my stairs is drying!

I love vintage dress forms! Here is one I use in the store to display jewelry. So pretty!

Last week, I added "the perfect man" to my collection! After I took off his ugly grey sweater, just look at how handsome he is! I don't now if I can sell him! I hate it when this happens! Anyway, for now he sits quietly and listens to my stories of how beautiful my stairs are going to be! I can talk to him about all my future projects and I don't get that same look from him as I do when I share my ideas with Mike! Maybe I should take him home? I have just the spot in my hall, right next to my stairs. Oh, I can see it already!! :) I had better get to work on those stairs!

I'M STILL DOING IT...

Well, nothing is ever as easy as it looks! My son and I have removed all the carpet off the stairs, pulled every staple and sanded for 4 hours straight! (both of us!) This is why you should never wash the kitchen floor...it brings you to the mouldings, which bring you to the walls, which turns into the hall...I think you get the picture. The never ending story? No, I see the end in sight thanks to Diane at "In My Own Style", I have my eye on the prize! My husband on the other hand does not see the same picture, but he will!

The carpet was sort of glued along the wall, so we had to do some sanding and filling and more sanding and priming, but I think it is looking good! I am not so sure about this plywood landing but I am working on it. Any ideas?

The risers are not great so we had to fill some areas and sand just a bit more!!

I also took this opportunity to paint the banister and all the rails. After all, it is only fair that if the stairs are getting a face lift that the railing gets one too! Next, we primed the risers...looking good!

Once the banister was painted the walls looked a bit dull so...I painted the hallway too! Everything is looking so clean and fresh. I just wish my husband could feel my joy. I am tired but happy!

Last night my husband came home with these beautiful flowers...Why you ask? I think he wants me to forgive him. I think he is saying that although he hates the mess I am making, he trusts me!

I JUST DID IT!

I would be lying if I said that I did not already have a "FEW" projects on the go but, after a rather large martini and a very inspiring BLOG post, "My Foyer Staircase Reveal" by Daine at "In my own Style"....I felt that old familiar feeling of uncertainty mixed with excitement. Could my stairs look as wonderful as the one on the screen in front of me? I am thinking so! And not only that but my son said "you can do it" and he would help!

Since my husband was not home at the time, my "partner" and I took just a little "look see" under the carpet. It looked just like the "before" pictures of the BLOG that I was reading and I am thinking that, that is a good thing! So, here we sat, waiting for my husband to come home just to be sure that he would be okay with this idea. Well, we sat and sat and he was late, so....we started without him! While we were tugging away at the carpet and wondering just how many staples could there be...in he walked! I can not share exactly what happened next but.....

by 10:30pm we had 3 steps done! Not bad! I can so totally picture how BEAUTIFUL our steps are going to look. My husband on the other hand is not as visual. I will keep you posted!

Today is the morning after and I am glad that although slightly "tipsy" as my son tells me...

I JUST DID IT!

IT DIDN'T STICK!

Tell me you have been there before! I have painted hundreds of pieces of furniture and every so often...it just does not stick! Oh, I get so mad at myself! I should have guess, I should have known! I thought I was so smart, I finally found some time to get some painting done and I did such a good job cleaning up the inside of this wonderful farmhouse cabinet but...I should have listened to that little voice inside my head! Now look what I have to do...what a mess!

As someone who likes to look at the positive side of things, this experience has given me an opportunity to share some valuable information. Before you start repainting your flea market find you need to know what type of paint was used to create its current finish. "How do you know if it is oil or latex?" Well, let me tell you....

- Traditional paints are either water-based (latex) or oil-based (alkyd)
- You CAN NOT paint water-based paint directly over oil-based paint (I knew this!)
- You MUST prime first before painting water-bases over oil-based
- You can paint oil-base over oil-base
- You can paint oil-base over latex paint without primer but you should give it a light sanding first.
- You CAN NOT mix oil and water based paint in one can, this will create a toxic gas!

So, how do you tell what your project piece is painted with???

First, clean a section of your painted surface, then soak a cotton ball or q-tip in alcohol (not vodka) and rub back and forth over the cleaned area. If the paint comes off, it's latex (water base), if the paint does not come off it's alkyd (oil base).

Another little tip to assure success is to sand off any super shiny or glossy finish before you prime or paint. It is always the prep that makes the difference!

Since this picture was taken, I am happy to report it is all done and ready to come into the store!

SANDPAPER 101

If you have a project piece and are ready to RECLAIM & RESTYLE, understanding some of the basics will add to your confidence when starting your project. This may be elementary for some of you, but it may answer a few questions for others. So, though it may sound silly, I thought I would share some information on SANDPAPER! That one piece you have in the garage may not be quite the right piece to start your project so....here we go!

Sandpaper works a lot like a saw, chisel or any other cutting tool. The particles on sandpaper are made up of a number of sharp edges that cut the wood the same way a saw blade does.

Home improvement centers sell a commercial grade of sandpaper in different "GRITS". Grit is reference to the number of abrasive particles per inch of sandpaper. The lower the grit number, the rougher the sandpaper. The higher the grit number, the smoother the sandpaper.

30-36 Grit - Very Coarse - Good for rust removal

40-60 Grit - Coarse - Heavy sanding & stripping

80-120 Grit - Med - Smoothing & removing of small imperfections

150-180 Grit - Fine - Final sanding before finishing

220-240 Grit - Very Fine - Sanding between coats

I think you get the idea! By going through the grits, each progressive piece of sandpaper removes the scratches from the previous piece. So, before you touch that one piece of sandpaper that you found in the garage, take a look at the number on the back of the sandpaper and think, is this the right piece for you to start with?

Who knew that decorating your home could be good for the environment?

REDUCE & REUSE - Keep furniture out of the landfill and support the 3 "R's". Reduce, reuse & recycle. Decorating costs effectively can start at home. If you are looking for just the right piece to complete your space, you may just have to step into the next room, the attic or the garage. Just because you have always used that small table to hold your telephone in the kitchen, does not mean it can't hold your glass of wine in the bathroom! Be imaginative and use pieces for other than their intended purpose and feel free to move furniture from one room to another. This is a great way to get organized and create new functional spaces.

(just missing the glass of wine!)

RECYCLE & RESTYLE - What about the bedroom suite handed down to you from your Grandmother? It comes with plenty of sentimental value but not much else. Why not breathe new life into it and treat it to a fresh coat of paint? You will create something that is up to date and that compliments your decor. With proper preparation, primer and paint your options are limitless! Not only will you gain appreciation for your new pieces, you gain a fresh new bedroom style. You will have also freed up some space where you were storing your dusty hand me downs. (And who couldn't use more space?)

RECLAIM & REDECORATE - Think outside the box! Your grandparent's old trunk does not have to stay in the garage. Reclaim it and use it as a coffee table in your family room. The storage is a bonus for videos, DVDS and magazines. Or, put legs on it and make it into a bench to sit on at your back door. You could use the storage to keep your family organized - gloves and hats in the winter and sun hats and sunscreen in the summer. An old wood ladder for example, from your uncle's apple farm could be a magazine rack in the family room, a one-of-a-kind pot rack above your island in the kitchen, a place to display photos in the den or a fun way to display and organize your high heeled shoes in the bedroom! Uncle Joe's ladder could also hold your towels in the bathroom or by the pool. Your creations will be inspiring!

D.D.D. - Dumpster Diving Diva! It's quite acceptable these days to admit that you found your latest home decor find on the side of the road! This way of decorating is truly WIN, WIN! (and it is good for the environment too!) Sometimes you can hardly believe your luck! Sometimes your spouse may look at you differently! If that antique chair at the end of some kind person's driveway is missing its seat, just drop a flower pot into the opening and place your chair in your garden or at your front door and fill with seasonal colour. But just remember...don't wait to pick up that chair until after you pick up your groceries or it will be gone!

(Of course today this would be filled with cedar and holly!)

Here is a perfect example of a "D.D.D Find". The photo below is of a table that is almost the same as the table that my mother-in-law found beside a dumpster.

What a way to start off the New Year! Canadian House & Home Magazine says that The Passionate Home is "WORTH THE DRIVE"! Tucked inside the January 2011 issue is the H&H Shopping Guide and this is what they said about The Passionate Home!

French country chic is hard to resist at the best of times - it's just all so charmant! - let alone when it beckons among a whimsical mix of upcycled, vintage and one-of-a-kind pieces, as it does at The Passionate Home. Located in historic McBurney Lane, this dangerously affordable shop trades on the thrill-of-the-find. It's a treasure trove for a romantic nursery (vintage iron and Provencal-inspired daybeds), nostalgic garden accessories (wrought iron galore) and repurposed "junk style" pieces. If you can't decide what to grab, go for a bottle of Pre de Provence French soap - at least you'll feel like you took part.

Let me tell you that after reading this, I was so thankful to H&H for putting into words, that which I sometimes find so difficult to explain. Their description of the store is exciting and great and it made me so proud! Sometimes, when you are in your own business everyday and you are constantly trying to do better, you wonder what other people see. Thank you H&H and thank you to everyone who has shown support for The Passionate Home. It means more to me than I will ever be able to put into words.

As a small business owner, I am also so very grateful to the local community who chose to shop local this holiday season. Downtown Langley ran the "WIN THE WINDOW"contest where local businesses donated a gift to the window and every time you made a purchase at one of the participating merchants, you could enter to win the more than $5000 worth of gifts. I am happy to say that Jackie made her first visit to The Passionate Home and entered to win. On December 22 her name was pulled from thousands of entries and although Jackie had to work, I was excited to meet her husband and help him load up his treasures. Congratulations Jackie and Kurt and thank you for shopping at TPH.

WOULD YOU LIVE IN A BARN? ABSOLUTLEY!

I recently borrowed a book from the library titled, THE NEW LOOK OF COUNTRY. It was packed full of inspiration and beautiful photos, but one particular part caught my eye...DESIGN RECONSIDERED. Not only was the picture right up my alley with it's iron daybed, antique arched window, Italian chandelier and old plastered walls, but the story that accompanied the photo made me smile. Enjoy!

In the 1890 short story "The Revolt of Mother", Mary Wilkins Freeman tells a tale of a woman who gets so angry with her farmer-husband for spending all of their money on a new barn that she takes up residence there. At the time, the idea of living in a barn was unthinkable. But today, our sense of what makes a home has changed, and our desire to preserve any piece of the past we can seems to know no bounds. Rather than lose barns, garages, carriage houses or former factories to the wrecking ball, people are rescuing them and reincarnating them as dwellings.

This story has got me rethinking our little shed out back! Are you thinking what I'm thinking?

I don't even think I would mind my new neighbours!

I am always excited to see a magazine in my mailbox and this month I was treated to a new magazine compliments of Invis-Feisal & Associates Mortgage Consulting, http://www.yourmortgageexperts.ca/. The title was HOME & MORTGAGE, but what really caught my eye was what was under the title...Sarah Richardson at Work & Play! I ran home from the mailbox! Open page 10, Sarah Richardson ingenuity at work, I can not read quick enough. One of Canada's favorite designers shares her sources of inspiration, colour palette preferences and relaxed reno philosophy. The article is in an interview format and there is a wonderful picture of Sarah and Tommy smiling right at me! It was a wonderful interview, but what I really wanted to share with you was something that Sarah said. The interview question was, "On what particular project did you learn the most, were most proud of the results, or had the most fun?" The part of the answer that interested me most was when she said, "The country home was the most challenging, rewarding and fun. It was the most fun because it was a beautiful country setting and we used the type of furniture that I love: vintage finds from flea markets that were painted or refinished." I think Sarah needs to visit The Passionate Home!

I was very excited to find the January 2011 Style at Home Magazine in my mailbox last night! I love to read the articles and look at all the pictures of items that they could have purchased from TPH!!! Under "notes from the editor" Erin is talking about "the latest craze" and I was delighted to read what Executive editor Suzanne Moutis wrote about being a vintage romantic at heart. "There should always be room for one-of-a-kind pieces and things with individuality" she observed. I agree, don't you? I think Suzanne would love The Passionate Home!

One of the benefits of owning your own business is it allows you a platform for change and contribution to your community. Karla, owner of McBurney Junction Interiors and The Passionate Home created a "WIN A $3000 BEDROOM MAKE OVER CONTEST" in May of this year. We took a few photos along the way to share with you the transformation. Unfortunately, I do not have a photo of the room before it was painted, but it was a bit darker than builder beige. Mark from All Bright Painting in Langley donated his time to this project and did an incredible job. Thanks Mark and team!

After speaking with the winning family and touring their home, our inspiration came from their many beautiful and colourful paintings. Although the room was furnished from both The Passionate Home and McBurney Junction Interiors, the bedding was purchased at some of our favorite stores.

We had a custom king size headboard made in a deep chocolate brown...so beautiful!

With the high ceilings it was important to find just the right piece for above the bed.

Last minute clean up before the big reveal.

It was from this Pottery Barn pillow that we picked the colour for our room, Benjamin Moore Atmospheric Blue. The paint for this make-over was generously donated by Benjamin Moore Langley Decorating Center. Thank you Earl!

The family was not allowed into the room until we were done, but somehow, somebody small snuck in when we weren't looking! He promised not to say a word and spoil the surprise!

We also added a hinged lid ottoman to provide extra storage as well as a place to sit and play guitar. The ottoman also looked great at the end of the bed. The large painting was acquired from another room in the home.

We dressed the bed and added colourful throw pillows and blanket. We stole the blue bedside table from the guest room and added the new chocolate one on the right. The lamps are also new to this space.

The home owners like to use this space for computer work, so we added this distressed red antique desk and leather covered stool. The stool is made from reclaimed bicycle tire rims, very cool and the lamp and painting were more items we borrowed from other rooms in the home!

We added this basket to hold extra toys for the kids. Easy to clean up and it looks great!

One happy family! Thank you both for allowing us into your home and for being such wonderful and inspiring people! We hope this room provides the inspiration, relaxation and peacefulness that you were hoping for.

CREATIVE DISPLAY

I desperately needed more display area in the store and did not want to just go out and purchase something, I wanted to RECLAIM, RESTYLE & REDECORATE! After all, that is what we are all about here at TPH. So, I thought I would share with you how an idea became reality! It all started with this great old country cabinet found at a local antique store. One look at all those shelves and I hauled this little baby into my van! Actually, two strong men lifted it into my van, but, I however, was able to pull it half way out once I got home!

I took the doors off and attacked the whole unit with my Dewalt orbital sander. You can see the difference between the sanded top shelf and what it looked like before the sanding.

I also purchased some very old and very dirty barn boards to build extra shelves. The one on the left is how they came and the one on the right is how it looks after a good sanding. After sanding these boards, I looked like the board on the left!

Once the barn wood boards were all nice and clean, I coated them with clear varathane. In this photo, the one of the left is the "after" board.

Here is a closer look at how varathane can make a big difference.

Once the whole piece was clean, sanded and varathaned, I attached the doors to either side of the cabinet to make one eight foot long display area. The barn boards where cut to fit on the doors and I attached each shelf with rod iron brackets.

Ta Da! Here is the finished unit! Just look at all that display area! Even though I said that I did it all, I must confess, nothing is ever as easy as it starts out to be. I guess you could kinda say that this was a family project! And for those of you who were shopping a TPH that Sunday...I apologize for the chaos and thank you for your positive encouragement!

ON THE HUNT & THE ONE THAT GOT AWAY!

On our continual quest to offer our customers hand picked treasures, Mike and I are headed south to Seattle. First stop is the Sand Point Antique & Design Market ~ Antique, Vintage & Junk Show. This show takes place on the second Saturday of each month. Being this was our first time to this show, I was very excited to see what sort of treasures where about to be discovered! Though we found the show smaller than we had envisioned, the booths were well displayed and there were lots and lots of great finds!

Loved this booth! All that vintage fabric made into beautiful pillows and the most beautiful handmade roses. I would take it all if I had the room!

Here is another booth...here is where I am wishing we brought a truck! I would take that daybed in an instant!

One of the great things about visiting all these flea markets is that it is a constant supply of ideas, inspiration and happiness! (I am sure you know what I am talking about)

We enjoyed lunch at Pike Place Market in Seattle. If you have never been, Pike Place Market is one of the oldest continually operated public markets in the United States.

We woke early Sunday morning, visited the closest Starbucks and headed over to Fremont. We are always lucky at this flea market that happens every Sunday. Tents line the street with fresh cooked treats, handmade wares, antiques and collectibles.

I am all about recycling, so I just loved this tent filled with old blazers and jackets that have been recreated into stylish one-of-a-kind pieces. This blazer was one of my favorites with the birds on the front and the addition of the hood. He had lots of different styles to choose from. Though I did not take one home this time, I will definitely look for this tent next time.

One thing I noticed this time was that some of the displays were really works of art. Such time and effort to show off all the great finds.

We discovered a new booth on this visit and I just loved everything! I brought home a few treasures for the store!! Check out http://www.fleamarketchics.blogspot.com/. Again, I would have taken a whole lot more if we had the room. Nice lady, great finds, good prices...right up my alley!

What really adds to the thrill of the hunt is music. When we arrived this lovely lady was very focused on playing a Christmas carol and with gloves on to boot! I have to say, it made me think about what day it really was! She has lost in her music. I am sure I am not the only one that she made smile that day!

Another new discovery was made in Mount Vernon, WA. If you are in the area, Red Door Antique Mall is a must! I could have filled my whole van here! This is one store I would make a special trip to visit!

This sadly is the one that got away! It was love at first sight! Oh how I want to take this tub home with me, and well, I thought about it too long and went home without it. Now I think about it all the time! Lesson learned...when you really love something, just "do it". Say those little words that make us so happy...."I'll take it"!

A DAY IN A KAYAK

Join us for a day of kayaking in Deep Cove, North Vancouver

Deep Cove is located in North Vancouver, BC at the foot of Mount Seymour. Deep Cove faces due east, fronting on to Indian Arm, a branch of Burrard Inlet.

We rented two double kayaks from Deep Cove Canoe & Kayak and took our kids out for their first kayaking experience. The weather started out perfectly for a great day!

Once on the water, look who was first to greet us!

Oh, I just can not help it, I find beautiful homes wherever I go...I think we need to paddle just a little bit closer!

Wow, this is the life! The ocean is your backyard. I bet they kayak everyday! Lucky!

I don't think we should get out and swim here!!! In this one area along the shoreline, these jelly fish where everywhere. They looked absolutely amazing so close up. There must have been hundreds in this one area.

It has been quite a while since I have seen so many starfish in the wild.

No, we did not take this one home!

Another official greeter up the coast line. We were able to get quite close to this fella. If you look closely, you can see that he is winking at us!

What do you know, another lovely home for me of ogle!!

This one was tucked into a little cove. So beautiful! I am speechless!

Well, we are going to head back. A perfect day for family time, fitness, education and little bit of home ogling. This photo looks clear as a bell, but let me tell you, just around that bend, a mighty wind and white caps test our patience, strength and endurance. Just like life, sometimes it takes three strokes forward and two back but eventually you arrive at your destination!

CANNON BEACH AND MY NEW FAVORITE STORE

Welcome to Cannon Beach, Oregon

Our first morning we enjoyed a wonderful home cooked breakfast and good old-fashioned service at The Lazy Susan Cafe. I highly recommend a meal here while you are in town. Check out http://www.lazy-susan-cafe.com/ The cafe itself is not large but the flavours are, so enjoy!

After breakfast we walked the main street and discovered this great little shop called The Buttery. The woman was lovely and everything was so pretty. Visit here too! http://www.thebutteryincannonbeach.com/.

I was told that I MUST visit Sesame and Lilies and I DID and I LOVED IT! I took a few photos to share but there is nothing like experiencing the beauty in person. This stop is an absolute MUST while visiting Cannon Beach.

Well, we did more than shop...we hit the beach and we hit the waves!

Okay, I didn't hit the waves, but I was very busy studying the environment, (he, he) just look at those fabulous homes. I wonder who lives there?? I know I would want to live here!

We all had an amazing time at the beach, everyone was happy doing their thing.

Good old fashioned "FAMILY TIME".

No I-pods, no computer games, no telephone, life is good!

(and to think we all survived!)

I did think about work a little...

After a day of exploring we returned to our cottage to discover that Tuesday was the Cannon Beach Farmers Market, so we just had to check it out. There was music, fresh bread, fresh fruit and veggies, seafood, flowers, jams and chutneys. The market was not huge but it offered everything you needed to make a delicious meal.

This was our first visit to Cannon Beach and you can bet it will not be our last!

Looks like it is time to build a fire and enjoy an evening beverage.

Tomorrow is another day to explore.

Farm Chick Antique Sale in Canada??? No, not really, but we did go to the Farm Chick Sale in Spokane and brought home a van load of treasures to share with everyone.

This month we pitched our tent out front of the store and filled it with all the wonderful goods purchased at the Farm Chick Antique Sale. We put on our aprons and had our first ever "FARM CHICK TAG SALE"!

FARM CHICKS ANTIQUE SHOW

Welcome to the Farm Chicks Antique Show in Spokane Washington. We arrived one hour before the doors opened and this was our place in line! I guess it's not bad considering there is about 4000 people behind us! The bad part was that everyone in front of us purchased all the good stuff before we even entered the building!

Saturday was crazy busy, you couldn't even get close to some of the booths. We purchased weekend passes and were able to be the first ones in on Sunday so that I could take some pictures, talk to some creative people and to be inspired! Even though the booths were picked over, they still looked so beautiful.

This had to be one of my most memorable discoveries. The tag under the statue reads "It takes courage to grow up and become who you really are", e.e.cummings. It brought tears to my eyes and I am wondering if I should have purchased this love? It is funny what touches our heart. More great Junk Girls creations! I think this might be a fun project to do with my kids! Just a great way to recycle and reuse old spoons!

This is a funny shot of the top of a booth by Bungalow Creations but I just loved how they built this structure using old ladders. I think my "structure builder" Mike would like to build me an arbour with old ladders!!! Love it!

I loved everything in Anne's booth but unfortunately almost everything was sold by the time I reached her. Once I got home, I remember how much I loved her booth last year too! I did however purchase a few pillows and they will be available for sale at TPH. Anne owns Chateau Chic Antiques.

I am still wondering if I should have taken this chair. I think this is my happy place!

I wanted these pillows too but someone beat me to it!

I was also on a hunt for cowboy boots but again I came home in runners! I just don't understand it. Is everyone a size 8.5? The Farm Chicks Show brings out the flowered aprons, flowing skirts, cowboy hats and boots! Maybe next year I can be a Farm Chick too!

Enamelware anyone and everyone! Big Ship Salvage Enamelware had rows and rows upon colour, shapes and sizes.

Something about old clock faces I find very attractive and I loved this pillow too!

Another creative structure built out of old wood sash windows. It was like a petite greenhouse. I may try my hand at recreating this too! (In my spare time!!)

So many lovely displays! It was a crazy two days. We drove, we ran, we shopped, we ate, we drank, we had conversation, we met new friends, we were inspired, we had fun! Mike said it was like watching me with my long lost sisters. Who knew that so many people in one place would love rust and chippy paint as much as I do!

It was a very long drive home. We occupied ourselves with singing really loudly, checking out over peoples licence plates, waving at fellow Canadians, though there weren't many and a leisurely walk at a scenic stop...I don't think so!

IDEATIONS FROM MY GARDEN

Welcome to my home! We have been busy checking things off our "to do list" and making our ideas come to fruition. We hope that by sharing these ideas with you it will ignite your own creativity!

At the front door we had a very old and ugly Adirondack chair that just needed a good sanding and a few coats of colour to make it sit proudly. I think it makes for a welcoming place to rest after a busy day. I also have always wanted shutters on my home, much to my husband's dismay, so I took it upon myself to paint these old wood shutters to match my front door and I had them just leaning up against the window, ready and waiting for when Mike came home from work. I even had the tools out... what could he say!

Two easy paint projects that make my front door so welcoming! Thanks Honey!

We have a "make-do" attitude in our family, so we challenged ourshelved to try to make the yard beautiful using things we already own. Working this way is both good for the environment and our pocket book. To add interest in the front garden we have a concrete birdbath, slightly damaged, I found this years ago at a thrift store for $25! Behind the birdbath is a portion of a picket fence I found on the side of the road! One person's junk...

Something else I have always wanted was a climbing rose. I planted this one last year at the front door with visions of it growing along the front of the house. Well, this year it is growing alright! I am really not sure how to train it but for now we put up this trellis to keep the roses from growing under the roof line. I love the red flowers and how they match my newly painted red chair!

Welcome to the backyard. Here I put an old sign up on our shed and added old brackets to the door for interest.

Nothing beats a homemade birdhouse. "The house that junk built"!

We have a funny little garden under a tree in the back. I used reclaimed chimney bricks that we got for free to line the garden. In the garden we have some old rusty farm tools that we got from a garage sale and the birdhouse was found on dumpster day. I am a proud DDD...Dumpster Diving Diva!

A few years ago we built two raised vegetable gardens next to the shed. Not to complain, but the chicken wire fencing to keep the animals out was not too attractive, so this year I was inspired by a picture in a home and garden magazine. About 15 years ago, my girlfriend and
I rescued an old fence from a burn pile and I just knew that I would someday need these treasured planks. Well, the day has come...I took out my table saw last weekend and ripped each and every board in two in order to recreate the photo and make pickets for a much more attractive fence to keep the animals out of my veggies! An over sized vintage garden gate allows me the ritual of entering my soon to be, bountiful vegetable plot with pride! Supporting the three "R"s, our pathway was also constructed out of reclaimed paving stones. I think the imperfections add nothing but character!

The back corner of the yard had a wonderful view of our neighbours over sized workshop and forklift that he so kindly left in his back yard, in perfect view from my kitchen!! One can only be so neighbourly...that view had to change! So, my "structure builder" Mike and I got to work. We created this great space with two double hammocks that enable the whole family to lay out to watch the night sky. It is my hope that the grapes we planted at each end will grow nice and thick!!! From lemons to lemonade!

Another way to reuse, recycle and to add interest to your garden is to use old windows, with or without the glass, they add colour and character.

This is a large township drain disguised as a birdhouse. Only you and I know what is underneath!

Along the side fence we've used an old iron bed, both the head and foot board grace this garden. There is another bedstead at the front of both raised veggie gardens. Iron beds also make for a great trellis! "Making do" lets a person give new life to a piece of history, flaws and all!

A little memento from a trip to the sunshine coast...driftwood. There are pieces of it here and there in the garden and when I look at it, it reminds me of our holiday. No two pieces are alike, each bent and shaped into unique pieces of art.

We saved this old trellis destined for the dump and hung it proudly to train a clematis

Another use for old windows is to hang them for privacy and to create outdoor rooms.

Around the fire pit we have this great bench! It feels just like you are camping. The day started as a family hike to walk the dog and ended up to be a search and rescue mission for two old logs and this cut log that we found deep in the woods of a public park that will remain nameless! It was very, very heavy and a long walk out of the woods but what we women won't do when we get an idea into our heads!

You can not just have a garden full of recycled finds...you need flowers! Thanks to some very special friends who shared their perennials with me, I have the pleasure of watching all sorts of little babies grow.

Another dream of mine was to look out my kitchen window and see flowers. We have been in this home for seven years and up until last week, I had a wonderful view of our neighbours shed and storage area. Well, since my "structure builder" Mike was purchasing lattice for the corner pergola, why not pick up an extra piece to create a trellis outside the kitchen window. Again, I had it painted and ready when he got home from work. The trellis is sitting just high enough to reach the neighbours roof line and completely block the shed. We added these two concrete fireplace pillars I purchased them from a concrete place going out of business. The guy could hardly believe that I would want them out of his discard pile, but I just knew that I had to have them. (I only had to wait a few years to use them) But I loved them the whole time! Mike also built me a planter box out of the old lumber we had left over from another project and I have planted two vines. I am sure I will have a wall of white flowers by the end of summer! We call this my "Secret Garden".

Sitting in my "Secret Garden" is this little guy and I am sure he is just busy thinking about new and creative ideas for the garden. What about you...any ideas for your garden?

AN EDUCATION PAID WITH GOLD??

Junking has to be win, win for everyone in our family, so this time it was my son who had a request as we planned to get up early and head east. "Mom" he said, "I have been watching the price of gold lately and I think if we spent a little time panning for gold, I bet I could pay for my college education".

I'm thinking if we go after I've done what I want to do and the weather is nice and we have the extra time and if we can find a place, I guess we can go! Well, guess who was standing by the van in the morning with two pairs of rubber boots, a gold pan and wearing a big smile?? You guessed it, my little gold miner, Max!

Here are my boys on the hunt for our future security and dreams of living on campus.

There they are! I am sure my husband is giving Max lessons from when he was a boy and his dad owned a gold mine! We may be in luck!

I think they may have something???

"What is BC Jade worth mom?" Well, it is a start! I remain hopeful!

Laurel and I did not bring the appropriate footwear so we busied ourselves with taking silly pictures of ourselves! Until.....

"Honey...I think we have something here!"

Can you see it?? I know the picture is not too clear but I assure you, it is bigger than it looks!

Well, after doubling our money, it was time to go. It was a beautiful day in Chilliwack, quality family time and not one to darken a dream, we are going to come back another day!

I think our stake so far will get Max a drive by at UBC, but that is about it! Good thing he is only 11 years old, we have lots of time!

Meet Donna "the women who can do it all" and CEO of Junky Funk Interiors!

Donna was kind enough to welcome my whole family into her home to take a first hand look at all her amazing creations and repurposed JUNK! (Of course we all know that it is not really junk at all, but diamonds in the rough) The first thing I noticed at the front door was this great dresser with the fun use of numbers. (I am going to do this too!) I love the layering of the old wood sash windows and is that burlap I see?

The opposite wall from the dresser is this amazing coat rack! It looks right off the farm. Under the rack is a long bench that you can sit at to put on your shoes and under the bench are baskets for storage. Just a great use of space!

What is this you ask??? Why it is the stairs going up stairs of course!

I just could not stop looking at the great staircase that Donna has built. The use of reclaimed lumber and notice the old yard sticks!!! Each step is a unique piece of art!

Talking about art...check out her TV stand. Donna made this from an old pallet, ingenuous! The crates underneath hold her movies. There were many crates and old boxes in the room consealing many everyday objects like her stereo and speakers.

Another unique vinette in Donna's front room is made up of an old wood gate, ladder, old game boards and that black trunk not only looks great, it makes for extra storage!

Just look at this side table with the "Game Board Tray". I love it! Well, I loved it all!

Another amazing idea are these no sew curtains. She has taken a sheet, folded it over an old wooded hanger and secured in place with clothes pegs!!

Here is a full shot of that curtain. My head is swimming with ideas!

On the other window instead of a sheet she has used a painters drop cloth and sewn on little buttons. So simple and just look at the results!

This old bed spring I just love. Donna has it hanging on her wall in the kitchen and uses it as a message center. LOVE IT!

Another vinette in the kitchen is this lattice piece. It looks like a tool caddy with plates inside and I think I see little hooks along the bottom to hold keys??

I had a customer come into the store the other day looking for something funky to put her pencils in for the kitchen. I have to say, I did not think of this idea! How fun!

Or what about this idea?

Let us move on into the bathroom. Donna made this cute shutter out of reclaimed barn board. I have stacks of this at home and might just give this project a try. I also love the coloured jars on the window sill. So simple and so beautiful!

Here is one of my favorites...we just never have enough room to hang all our towels. I think this is an old door and again, great use of numbers! LOVE THIS TOO!

As I have always said...You can never have enough ladders!

At the end of the hall is the master bedroom. My heart is quickening and sorry Mike, it is not you and how close you are behind me...its Donna! Just look at this bedroom. The pictures just do not do it justice. What a place to relax at the end of the day. Donna has really created a mood and I love the "Messy Bed" (I think she gives lessons on this technique)

The headboard is made from an old wood door, garden gate and tin. The bedding was linen, lace, cotton and burlap.

I thought my cat, Popsicle was comfy...I hope she doesn't see this picture or I won't hear the end of it!

Breakfast in bed anyone?

I really like the idea of the old iron headboard on the dresser. You can really appreciate its beauty.

This is the window in the master...are those tealights in the jars?? Another great idea!

A FUN DAY IN THE USA

Welcome to Lynden Washington, the second largest city in Whatcom County. Established in 1874 it is today home to one of the largest Dutch American communities in the nation. This would explain the large windmill I noticed driving into town!! This was the first stop on our trip. We visited a few antique shops where I purchased a great old wooded hat rack and then stopped to photo City Hall. I just love old buildings! This was my first visit to Lynden and it is only 5 miles from home!! Very sad!!

One of my customers said to be sure to stop in Old Town Bellingham and visit the antique mall. It was here that I purchased a set of vintage corbels. Much to my husbands dismay, we enjoyed lunch at the Old Town Cafe and not the Tavern across the street!

There was one booth in the mall that got its money out of a GARDEN stencil. They stenciled everything. I got some really great ideas! The opportunities are limitless! I was very excited, Mike however just rolled his eyes!

Our next stop was the Fairhaven District in Bellingham. We enjoyed the European atmosphere with outdoor courtyards, cafes, galleries, restaurants and best of all, quaint specialty shops.
We even purchased ice cream from a big red double decker bus!

Look who welcomed us!! Well, who am I kidding, he didn't even blink!

I loved this little shop. A must see when visiting Fairhaven.

Another great little space was "A Lot of Flowers". It is sort of an inside, outside store with beautiful flowers and lovies for your garden. I am inspired to get to work in my own garden!

She had everything arranged by colour, real eye candy. It was so peaceful and what a lovely day! Another pretty store to visit while in Fairhaven is "A Garden Room".

These corbels are a bit too high for me to reach but I would have loved to take them home too!

We finished up our day with an oyster dinner in La Conner. Founded in the early 1860's it is Skagit County's oldest community. You can visit it here http://www.laconner.net/. The Vintage Lighting store was closed by the time we arrived but we did visit "Nasty Jack's Antiques", and of course the Olive Store! I almost feel like we are on vacation, what a wonderful town! I think we should all make more time for days like these! Cheers!

THE BEAUTY OF BURLAP

Burlap is good for so much more than just a sack race!

It seems like every time I open up a decor magazine there is some piece of furniture upholstered in burlap. I love it! Burlap is a coarse woven fabric usually made of jute or other vegetable fibers. It is durable, breathable and environmentally friendly.

The texture of burlap may have you thinking it may be just for rustic country decor, but just take a look at this daybed sofa with French Empire carving from http://www.thebellacottage.com/.

In the garden burlap not only makes for a biodegradable weed barrier but it sets for a lovely garden party! Table covers, placemats and runners..OH MY!

Though burlap would not make the best curtains in direct sunlight, these curtains make a beautiful room divider! The neutral colour makes it easy to add to any decor. It also adds texture and character.

Crafting with burlap is fun. It makes for a great backing for cork boards or bulletin boards. If you can sew, the opportunities are limitless. Pillows, bags, garden apron and even clothes!

When I was in grade school, I even remember my dad wallpapering our hallway with burlap! I thought he was crazy! Who knew?

A natural fabric, burlap is recyclable and may one day surpass cotton as the most used natural fiber. I know that I have been inspired to consider burlap for my next project. What about you?

THE LOVE OF A STATUE

A BUST is a sculpted or cast representation of the upper part of a human figure. This one sits on my mantel at home and there is something about her that is beautiful and captivating.

This "love" is trying to keep warm by my fireplace! I find something calming about her sweet little face. When decorating with a statue indoors, it is like bringing the outside in!

It's funny really. These are my girls and they sit beside each other all day and never speak to each other. I wonder if they are fighting or just lost in their own thoughts.

Here is a garden statue brought indoors to listen to your tales as you wash up. You can add a statue or bust to any room in your home inside or out.

I would love to say that this is my backyard, but sadly, it is not. This beautiful display is at Gina Glavin's French Inspired Fantasy - see March/April 2010 Issue of Victoria Magazine. I do however have a statue at the back of my yard, a gift from special friends years ago. I often look out my kitchen window at her and wonder how she is doing out there!

Venus de Milo is for sale at The Passionate Home. This statue depicts Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love and beauty. You could take her home and put her in your bathroom or bedroom to hang your necklaces! Of course the real statue is in the Louvre Museum in Paris!

One of my favorites at the store is this little winged angel. He seems to be pondering what to do next! I think he might like to find a new home where he can sit in the garden or on a patio and keep someone company! He does not eat much and he loves to listen!!

At this French Market we found Mary Antoinette, Archduchess of Austria and Queen of France. She is the one on the right!!! WOW, how beautiful they both are!!

This statue may be just a bit big to bring indoors and may be a bit much for most gardens but with a little luck, you should be able to find one that can fit into your space just perfectly! When choosing your statue, really look at the face, each one has it's own story, it's own history and it needs to speak just to you! In the case of the Statue of Liberty, I think she speaks to many!

RECLAIMED SILVER

A TREASURE TROVE OF RECLAIMED SILVER

"Look what just arrived at The Passionate Home"

If you are a silver collector like me, you will want to see what just arrived in store!

I thought that I would share with you some photos of my silver collection. I love the detail on these two pieces and I also have the sugar and cream that match. I seem to have a bit of theme in my collection. I just love jugs or anything with a handle and a spout.

Another thing I love about old pieces of silver is that you often find them engraved with a bit of history. This teapot is to thank J.L. Watts for 25 years of service with Gulf Canada. Dated 1976 would mean that Mr. Watts started with the company in 1951...I wonder where he is now?

This is another great find! It is the lid to a serving platter and has the markings of the Union Castle Line. With a bit of research, I found that the Union Castle Line was a prominent shipping line that operated a fleet of passenger liners and freighters between Southampton and South Africa from 1900 to 1977. How it must have travelled before I came upon it!

Here is another photo of a grouping on the top of my buffet in my dining area. The jug in the back looks like it may be used in a restaurant for water. The little one in the from is solid silver and is marked with a hotel logo. The silver tray is one of Janis's "Junk Style" creations. She painted the tray with chalkboard paint and added a vintage jewel. I purchased it for the holidays but I think I will keep it out all year round.

I also have just a few vintage crystal finds to mix with the silver. I think it looks so pretty! The dish with the bird's nest makes for a perfect cranberry sauce dish and it cost me about $3.00 at a local thrift store. The decanter was a wedding gift to my Nana and Grandad. Did I mention that my Nana is in her 100th year!!

This shelf in my buffet is the perfect place to display my finds. Each piece comes with it's own little bit of history and a memory of how and when it came to be in my possession. I hope you have a little area in your home that brings you as much joy as this area brings me!
